DIY: Make your own insulation? YES PLEASE

Searching around I stumbled across this incredible article in Mother Earth News about how to make your own insulation from recycled paper that is fire retardant and pest resistant. Great part is it’s cheap, semi-simple, and all the needs are readily available.

Needs:

  • Old newspapers, cardboard, etc
  • Alum
  • Borax
  • You’ll also need to rent/borrow a farm hammermill/silage grinder

Doing a cost comparison for where I live, the homemade insulation costs $0.083 per foot while commercial blown fiber glass for Lowe’s is $.344 per foot! I’d save over $.26 per square foot insulating. Ka-CHING!

Yet another project to use that giant pile of used paper products in
